Navigating and embracing change: What can we learn from Simon Sinek

Recorded at Medtronic Leadership Lab Cultural Circle, September 2021:

In this short and powerful video Simon Sinek introduces a couple of concepts:

Embracing change for the individual

The importance of having an infinite mindset during times of change. He acknowledges that sudden change causes fear particularly when depersonalised and delivered via top-down messaging and PowerPoints.

We agree with Simon. We’ve seen people experience change in a variety of ways in response to traditional communication methods.

Change is an opportunity for new beginnings and creative thought.

Embracing change for the organisation

Change starts small! Reach 15–18% of your team/ organisation's early adopters, and you’ll hit the tipping point for lasting, “sticky” change. Intuitively 15-18%  feels right. This is why on larger change projects we coordinate a change network of people interested in working with colleagues and making the change happen.

Our approach is about equipping leaders to meet people where they are. To proactively think about and work with the individuals in their teams, whatever their mindset or emotional response to change may be. It’s working with people to consider the actual impact on their work, not top-down messaging.

Trying other ways to connect with people is vital.  We all react differently to change: the key is understanding our reaction and being mindful of those around us.

Watch the video and reflect on your change mindset and where you may be on the adoption ladder.
